The Three States of Mind

There are about 6.79 billion people that live in our world According to Wolfram Alpha, that's a whole lot. There are so many of us that it's hard to fathom that we could all differ from one another as we do-from appearance to personality. Of course there are many of us that are similar in a few Aspects as well, but even then, there will be Differences. Think of a person that you have the most in common with, and there will be Likely least one thing you both Disagree on greatly.

Our personalities are what make us up, and They are generally complex despite the simple categorizations we see today Such as: "He is a depressed man," or "She is an angry woman." But why is this the case? Take the example of a cake. The cake is not just a cake, it's a mixture of properly proportioned Various amounts of ingredients. Raise one of the ingredients amount even just slightly and the cake will taste different. The same can be applied to our personalities.

Within the mixing bowl of our mind, there are three main ingredients that make up the final product of our personality. They are the three 'gunas' or temperaments that include: tamas, rajas, and sattva . The varying proportions of these conditions or temperaments are thought Create what all of the different personality types. Below, I will break down the attributes of each, one by one.

Tamas
Of the three temperaments , Tamas is the lowest of all, being born from ignorance. One whose mind is saturated in Tamas will have a skewed perception of reality and false understanding of the purpose of life. They have not even feel They have a true purpose at all. They have zero drive, righteousness in THEIR actions and softness of emotions. Tamas represents darkness, as in When the mind is in a dark state, stuck or 'sleeping' in its lower, baser nature. Many factors can lower this thought Influence Such conditions as the people we Spend our time with and the foods that we eat. Meats, alcohol, overly spicy and sour foods will all overly Influence Tamas in your state of mind.

Rajas
This mode of thinking is in the middle, making it one step greater than Tamas but one step lower than sattva. It represents passion and ambition. One whose mind is saturated with rajas will always be chasing after something new as They will be filled to the brim with desires. As it craves satisfaction from worldly pleasures, joys and lust, it also breeds attachment and greed. If you play close attention to those around you, you will find that many of THEIR minds are predominantly ruled by the raja guna.

Sattva
The third mode of thought is the condition of the three highest and the subtlest of them all. Sattva represents light and GIVES birth to joy, serenity, creativity and poise. Become one's thoughts and actions purified Become nobility When influenced by the sattva guna. This is the most desirable of the three and can be influenced by pious, holy company and a purified vegetarian diet that is high in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Above All Three
All three of these conditions thought binds us to the external world and creates attachment even sattva. Though the attachments that the sattva guna breeds will be much purer than that of the tamas guna, an attachment is still an attachment. If you are locked in a jail cell, it does not matter Whether the lock is made of 14 carat gold or rusty iron, you will have an equally hard time trying to escape. All three of these gunas can be transcended by meditation based on True Knowledge imparted by a Spiritual Guru, then one will arrive at the most desirable mind purified and stats that can be achieved in this existence.
