Did you know that essential fatty acids were actually essential to our bodies? Surprising isn’t it? Okay, okay, all jokes aside, many of us have still not yet grasped the fact that we should not overlook these mighty fats that our bodies simply cannot create on its own. Of the essential fatty acids out there, omega 3 and 6 seem to be the most vital to our system as we absolutely need it for proper development. Not taking your required dose can lead to many things such as mood swings, hair problems, skin problems all the way to much more major issues such as memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD and more.
There are many benefits that can be found in Essential Fatty Acids since they are actually crucial building blocks to our body. It’s almost the same as asking what the benefits of water are! They are star players when it comes to the development of the brain and nervous system. They also help to regulate thyroid and adrenal activity and can ward off heart attacks and strokes with their ability to thin blood. These fatty acids also help with your physical appearance as well, banishing many skin problems, dandruff, split nails and brittle hair.
Where To Get It From
There are a wide variety of nuts and seeds out there that have more than enough of these fats for you, but flaxseed oil is by far my favorite. Last year, my cholesterol was a little higher than normal and my doctor recommended that I started taking fish oil supplements to aid in lowering it, but I refused to as I’m a vegetarian. I told him that I was going to take flaxseed instead, but he insisted that flaxseed is not cut out for the job.
Still, I did it my way for a few months, and I went back to get some blood work and see how my cholesterol was looking. Lo and behold, the levels had dramatically dropped to average. Needless to say, my doctor was shocked and admitted defeat as he’s never seen results occur that quickly, even with fish oil! Besides, the only reason EFA are found in fish is because the fish are eating all of the things that we should be eating such as plants and seaweed.
