As the world slowly takes another step towards being much more health conscious, the rise of cow-milk alternatives take a rise. Cow’s milk is a wonderful and nutritional drink, when it is taken from happy cows. But here in America, the calf’s are taken away from their mother cows and the milk that was meant for them are forcibly given to us instead, only after it is injected with many hormones. If you visit other countries where cows are treated with respect—such as India—the cow’s milk there will be a wonderful drink, but that is not the case here in the west.
These days we see many different milks on the market such as soy milk, rice milk, coconut milk etc. but one of the one’s that have taken my attention is almond milk. I have started to drink it within the past month or so, and I absolutely love it! All cow’s milk here—meaning both regular and organic—contain 59 active hormones along with many allergens, fat and cholesterol; while almond milk does not. Another bad thing about cow’s milk is that it’s allowed to have up to 750,000 somatic cells (pus) and 20,000 live bacteria in it before it is taken off shelves. I don’t know about you guys, but something about that grosses me out. How can you drink a glass of milk, knowing that there are hundreds of thousands of squiggly bacteria living inside of it?
This isn’t the case with almond milk. Not only is it free from all of these insane additives, it’s also only 60 calories and 3.5 grams of fat per serving making it a great milk substitute for those of you trying to lose weight. This low amount of calories will help you to keep your daily calorie intake low, rather than bumping it up almost a quarter-way with a regular glass of cow’s milk.
Besides helping cut calories and lose weight, the benefits of almond milk include many other things such as keeping your heart healthy—since it contains no cholesterol and only 5 mg of sodium per serving. Also, the Vitamin D that it boasts can help to keep your immune system and bones strong, along with warding off the Alzheimer’s disease. It also contains 50% of our daily value of Vitamin E that will help to keep your skin healthy, and Vitamin A to keep your eye’s healthy. Honestly, the only downside that I’ve found with almond milk is that it just doesn’t have enough protein in it, so I mix it with a scoop of Muscle Milk each morning, and I’m good to go! Swap out your normal milk with almond milk this week to see the benefits for yourself!
