How To Be A True Friend

In this age of social networking and technology, it’s no surprise that everyone is all about being popular. Who has the most friends and who has the most followers are now one of the first criteria that is checked before we actually get to know someone. Everyone naturally wants to be liked by everyone else, and in turn get as many friends as they can. Thus, the world is a breeding ground for brittle friendships. Why do I say brittle? Simply because almost all friendships are based on conditions. No matter how close you are to someone, look carefully and you will spot a condition.

Of course, there are true friends out there—and obtaining one of them is all you really need in this life, although none would also suffice. I think its time that everyone should analyze the relationships in their life and remove from it all forms of negativity. I believe that if everyone learned to be a better, truer friend, the world would be so much of a better place. Of course I’m not going to include the extremely obvious points such as being honest, abandoning any ulterior motives, being kind in thought word and speech etc. because these should be a given.

What Are Conditions?
Conditions on a relationship are simply anything that goes on between you and someone else that holds the relationship together—to the point that if it were taken away, the relationship would suffer. Some of the main conditions that have remained prevalent for quite some time are recreational activities. These can include drinking, smoking, sports, video games and much more. If you find that you have a “friendship” with someone based on any condition, try to be without it for once. If things seem strange or even worse, if you don’t feel right about attempting this—then just know that is not a true friendship.

O once used to hang out with a group of friends that used to pretty much meet up just to drink and go out to the club. I was the only one who used to be present and not drink. One day out of curiosity I openly asked everyone there if they would all be together if there was no liquor involved. Needless to say I unintentionally made things a bit awkward and most of them struggled to put their answers together only to spurt out an “of course” that wasn’t very convincing. I know the truth, and they all know the truth as well. A few weeks later, one of them called me to tell me that I was right, and they didn’t feel right about agreeing with me out in the open. True friends should be able to be with each other and do nothing—just being there whole-heartedly should be enough.

Everyone Should Be “Real”
If someone can’t accept one of your traits, or you have to hide certain traits from them—then surprise, surprise…they are not a true friend. Likewise, if you have a problem with a trait of one of your friends and it gets to the point where they have to hide it from you, you aren’t really a good friend either.

A true friend should accept everything that comes with you, only pointing out the negativities that can be improved upon. You should always feel comfortable with being yourself around your friends—you should never have to put on an act to feel accepted and neither should they. You should always be allowed to speak your mind despite any differences in political, religious, environmental etc. issues and beliefs. This brings me to my last section.

The Ability To Agree or Disagree
Being a true friend does not mean having a million things in common. On the contrary it can mean quite the opposite in most cases. As I said before, you should always be able to speak your mind 100% and they should to, and at the end of the day, you both should have it in you to “agree to disagree”. Anyone who doesn’t take the time out to master the art of agreeing to disagree should not call themselves a true friend. All of their friendships will be falsified and just turn into a mere game of using each other and passing time.

Becoming a true friend to all is one of the greatest things you can do. Do not be the backstabbing friend who is always looking for the next opportunity to one-up his peers. Or the greedy friend who only keeps someone around for what goods or services they have to offer. Instead be a true friend, one who will go out of their way for the happiness of another; one that is always available, even when the chips are down. This is what the world needs—true friends.

How To Work Without Getting Tired

To obtain the ability to work without fatigue has probably been one of the greatest unspoken goals of all mankind. But like all great endeavors that seem impossible, it was given up on for the most part; instead, all sorts of chemically infused products were introduced to supply the need of energy. These include a wide variety of energy drinks, supplements, shots, etc. I’ve even seen an energy gum now on the market!

While these products may work for most, many of them aren’t natural and don’t really give you energy—they just “cover up your fatigue’’. None of these are necessary at all because we have all the energy we truly need right within us.

“Incredible amounts of energy are hidden in your brain;
enough in a gram of flesh to run the city of Chicago for 2 days.
And you say you are tired?”
~ Paramahansa Yogananda
Back in the day nobody had all of these artificial energy sources which prove them even more unnecessary since the means of survival was much tougher then. You didn’t see the guys working on the pyramids stop every few hours for a 5 Hour Energy shot. There are other natural ways to train yourself to become less tired while working.

Proper Diet
I know, I know, you’re probably thinking that everything has to do with what we eat these days, and you’re pretty much right. Many people throw the junkiest foods into their systems throughout the day and then wonder why their bodies tire out so easily. Instead of a bag of Doritos, why not eat a banana? Or a cucumber? Fresh raw fruits, vegetables and nuts are a great source of energy.

I used to drive around a 2000 Honda Prelude that constantly gave me problems, since the very first day I bought it used. After a few months of dealing with it, I finally took it to my mechanic so he can check it out. After some inspection, he asked me what grade of gasoline I give it. I told him regular unleaded and he immediately replied that that was causing the problem. The car was built to drive on premium gas and since I (and perhaps the previous owner) gave it regular unleaded, it caused the car to become sluggish. Our bodies are the same way. If we constantly give it low grade foods, then we should expect to be sluggish.

Avoid all meats because they load your body up on poisons. It is the poisons from meat and other junk-foods that make you feel tired. In addition, you should also take a good multivitamin and essential fatty oils (omega 3-6-9 from a flaxseed source).

Every once in a while, you should also get a checkup done at the doctor’s office to see if there are any vitamins or minerals you are low on. A few months ago I had been feeling really dizzy and more tired than usual and after doing some blood work I found out I was slightly anemic meaning I was low on iron. The doctor suggested taking an iron supplement daily and ever since then I’ve been fine. Vitamin D is also one of the main ones people are lacking despite the fact that its available just by standing out in the sun for a few minutes.

Get Some Fresh Air
One of the huge overlooked reasons on why people get tired so easily is the fact that they remain cooped up inside of their building or office for far too long. A lack of fresh air will deplete your energy just as bad as skipping an entire meal. The next time you feel tired, go outside and take a few minutes to breathe deeply and slowly. This will supply all the cells in your body—especially your brain—with the much needed oxygen that it craves. Not only will this replenish your energy, but it will also help curb your appetite so that you are less hungry. The more oxygenated your cells are, the less reason they have to send the hunger signal to your brain.

Exercise
Everyone used to tell me that exercise give you energy and I never believed them. After all, how can something that uses energy, give energy at the same time? It was only after some experimentation that I realized they were right, they just worded their statement wrong. What they should have said is that proper exercise gives the body energy—meaning you shouldn’t over do it.

Twenty minutes of rigorous exercise daily is more than enough. Even a half hour of walking or swimming is great. Over-exercise will only cause fatigue, the opposite of your aim. After I started working out a few times a week last year, I have noticed an increase in energy. Even the long days that normally wear me out, don’t do nearly as much as damage if I get up a bit earlier to work out.

It’s All In The Mind
Mind and body are directly linked. Why do you think people that constantly get angry or afraid suffer heart problems? Why does your heart start pounding when you are afraid? There is an obvious connection. Don’t ever say to yourself that you are tired. If you do, you will just become more tired. At the first inkling of fatigue creeping in, immediately affirm that you are full of cosmic energy a that you can never tired.

So many people say they are tired, but they are really not—they only think that they are. Take away these thoughts and what’s left is unlimited potential. You should also make it a habit to watch your thoughts and avoid thinking too much. Why? Because even thinking us up your energy reserves in the brain! Some people can sit at home all day and become tired; this is because they have filled their day with non-stop thoughts.

Learn to keep your mind in a balanced quiet state. If it begins to trail off elsewhere, slowly bring it back. Keep it occupied y concentrating on the breath while you work. This will keep you focused, and keep your body and mind energized and vitalized through any form of work.

How To Lower Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the measure of force against your artery walls that blood creates as it circulates throughout your entire body. High blood pressure has quickly become a major concern here in the west as it is said that about 68 million people suffer from it. I also noticed that many of my family members are dealing with it such as my late uncle and my father. My mom recently went to the doctor and found out that her blood pressure was on the rise, but she was still at the point where it could be controlled and hopefully reversed.

Unfortunately, those that let themselves go without any changes at all could just end up with high blood pressure for good—or even hypertension. If you are in the same boat as my mom or if you just want to maintain your perfect blood pressure, then check out my advice below.

Jiaogulan
Jiaogulan is a plant that grows in China and can be compared with ginseng—but it is superior in many ways. It’s mainly known for its adaptive properties meaning it adds its benefits where needed. If you are overweight, it will help you to lose weight and cholesterol. If you are underweight, it will help your body absorb more nutrients so that you look more healthier. But the herb is widely known for what it does for your blood and heart. It helps to heal pretty much any heart condition including blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, it will lower it. If you have low blood pressure, it will raise it—amazing right? It also has a ton of other benefits that I can go on for a while about, but I will try to stick to the topic of blood pressure.

Quit Your Bad Habits
Drinking alcohol and smoking are major factors that play into your blood pressure. If you over indulge in alcohol, there is no doubt you will experience blood pressure problems in the future. Even smoking just a little will cause it to rise as well. Check out this article to find out how you can quit smoking. Also start eating healthier foods. Oily, salty foods should be avoided if you wish to regulate blood pressure. Check out this article on how you can diminish your bad habits.

Meditate
Stress also plays a major role in your blood pressure, so it is important to learn how to manage your stress, and learn the art of staying calm at all times. Don’t over-stress yourself when it comes to the little (or even big) things. It does much harm to your system. One of the best ways to alleviate stress is by daily meditation; if you’re not sure how to meditate, then check out this article. For other ways to combat stress, thus lowering your blood pressure, this article may help as well.

Why You Should Never Quit

I’m sure that many of us can agree that life is great or can be great depending on if we play our cards correctly. I’m also sure that we all can agree that from time to time things can get extremely overwhelming to the point that we feel like quitting. Now when I refer to quitting in this article, I’m talking about “giving up” in any way, shape or form in something that we must do or want to do in order to better ourselves or our situation. That was a mouthful, but take the time to read it well and understand.

This week happened to be one of those weeks for me—as in it being overwhelming. I normally don’t mind taking on a heap of tasks at once, but this week was way too much—or so I thought. Between working full-time, managing this website, finishing up my book, and making music, I was this close to giving up some of my duties and only taking on what I could handle comfortably. I eventually got over it, and got everything done on time—but what’s important was the lessons I learned along the way. Here are a few things for you to consider before you follow through with your plan to quit, or give up.

Everyone Thinks Of Quitting
One of my regular customers I see at least once every two weeks or so happens to work as part of Disney’s Imagineers. He has to be one of the most hard-working individuals that I personally know. Disney is always coming out with newer attractions and technologies, but not many of us think about the work that goes into them. Many attractions take over a year or more to complete. And hundreds of employees are necessary just for one project, so you can probably imagine how much work goes into it. This man (I still don’t know his name) pretty much works all day and when he goes home at night, guess what? He’s still working. Day in and day out without a break, he said his first break in two years will be around Christmas time. Without ever even having time to eat a proper meal, he has become the epitome of hard work and passion to me.

So after going through my whole quitting ordeal during the week, he walks through the door. The first thing I ask him—right after I said hello, of course—was “Do you ever feel like quitting?” I had to know. After all, he works much harder than I probably ever will—if he never felt like giving up then something must be terribly wrong with me! He immediately responded, “Of course, I actually felt like quitting a few times just this week alone.” Then he proceeded to drop more knowledge than I was prepared for. He continued, “Everyone thinks of quitting, it’s a natural part of growth. People often equate ‘thoughts of quitting’ with quitting, but they are not the same. It’s how you handle these thoughts that matter the most.” That was exactly what I needed to hear. It was as if the anti-quitting God had sent him in just to tell me that.

Everyone thinks of quitting; and a lot of the time, these thoughts never cease. They subside and arise from time to time, all we have to do is learn to manage them and never act on them. How can we manage them? We must learn the art of changing our perspective (which you can read about here) and staying motivated. Even the most successful man feels like quitting from time to time, it’s a natural thought we must all either get used to or learn to banish.

There Is Nothing That You Can’t Do
I’m serious. Anything can be done if you continue to push through with a persevering mind. Do not quit. The saying goes “Don’t bite off more than you can chew,” but when things get overwhelming for me, I try to remember Yogananda’s rendition on the saying: “I believe you should bite off more than you can chew, and then chew it!”

You Will Regret It
Quitting is one of those things that you will pretty much always regret. I know people who have quit their jobs and now they are struggling to find a new one and wishing they hadn’t quit in the first place. I know people who quit certain physical fitness commitments and when they grew too heavy or sick, they wished they had kept going when they had the chance. I know people who have dropped out of school thinking they would go back at a later time—but now can’t find the motivation to return.

What If Thomas Edison Had Quit
There are so many successful men and women who probably had far greater reasons to want to quit than you do, and they didn’t. What if Thomas Edison had quit in inventing the light bulb? In his early years, his teachers had told him that he was “too stupid to learn anything.” This would discourage most, but not him. He went on trying to invent the light bulb and actually went through 1000 unsuccessful attempts! Many of us would have quit after just 50 attempts! Personally, I would have drawn the line at 10 attempts. But still he did not give up, and eventually he ended up with the working light bulb we have today.

What if he had stopped at his thousandth unsuccessful attempt? Chances are many other inventors wouldn’t want to pick up where he left off as they would think it’s useless, and the world would have remained light-bulbless for quite some time longer. Of course there are many other wonderful examples of people who went through far too much trouble, but still did not quit—such as Henry Ford and Socrates. So when the thought of quitting arises in your mind, banish it with this knowledge and keep going!

Story: How Big Is One?

This is a story on how you can make a difference even to one living thing.

As a man walked a desolate beach one cold, gray morning he began to see another figure, far in the distance. Slowly the two approached each other, and he could make out a local native who kept leaning down, picking something up and throwing it out into the water. Time and again he hurled things into the ocean.

As the distance between them continued to narrow, the man could see that the native was picking up starfish that had been washed upon the beach and, one at a time, was throwing them back into the water.

Puzzled, the man approached the native and asked what he was doing. “I’m throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it’s low tide right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I don’t throw them back into the sea, they’ll die up here from lack of oxygen.”

“But there must be thousands of starfish on this beach,” the man replied. “You can’t possibly get to all of them. There are just too many. And this same thing is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast. Can’t you see that you can’t possibly make a difference?”
The local native smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea he replied, “Made a difference to that one!

Why You Should Stop All Chemical Intake

In addition to what types of food you put into your body, you must also be aware of the sources from which this food is derived from. These days there are chemical additives placed into almost anything and everything. This is mainly done for three reasons.

The first reason is that many manufacturing companies try to get their foods and food products to last as long as it possibly can on the shelf. How do they do this? By adding many different chemicals and preservatives that make the food stay edible longer.

The second reason is that these fine companies are in the business to make the best tasting products using the least amount of money possible. So what does this wind down to? Yes, once again, more chemicals.

The final reason is that not only do these companies want their products to taste good; they want it to look good as well. Unfortunately for us, this means another set of chemical additives and artificial coloring is used to make products look more appetizing.

With this in mind, it’s no surprise as to why you can’t pronounce half of the ingredients on a can of soda. How many ingredients do you think is necessary to bake a loaf of bread? You don’t have to be a five-star chef to estimate that it probably calls for four or five ingredients at the most. I would say flour, sugar, salt, butter and yeast. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less but in any case, is this list not short and sweet?

Then why when we purchase bread rolls at the grocery store does the ingredient list contain 20-30 ingredients? There are so many unnecessary additives to even the simplest foods like bread! Go take a look into your pantry and look at all the amazing ingredients that you probably can’t identify, yet you throw them into your body with no problem!

The scary part is, not all of the chemicals are listed on the ingredient list! Many chemicals are added accidently through different packaging and many other ways. In fact, there are many doctors and scientists who have begun to point fingers to the world’s chemical filled diet as one of the main causes of many diseases including cancer.

There are actually a few places that offer programs for cancer patients, or anyone for that matter, where they will be fed a chemical free diet for about a month, and it is claimed that any cancer cells present will be destroyed in this period. Yes, they are claiming that a chemical free diet is the cure to cancer/prevention of cancer! Of course, I can’t say that this is a sure thing, as I have not witnessed it for myself; but I have heard many good things about it.

But for those of us who are well and healthy for now, we should take good care of our bodies by reading and researching ingredients that we aren’t familiar with, thereby becoming more conscious of what we feed ourselves or what becomes of us. I will break down a few of the main chemical additives you have all probably eaten in your life.

Artificial Colors: Many artificial colors that were developed in the 1900’s were banned by the FDA as they were proven carcinogens (cancer-exacerbating agents). The FDA currently only allows 10 colors in foods, four of which are reserved for specific use, meaning that some of the risks still remain.

Artificial Flavoring: Artificial flavoring means chemicals that were developed in a laboratory, that are meant to mimic flavors found naturally in foods. Some vanilla flavors are made from petroleum or paper-mill waste. Many of these artificial flavors are composed of hundreds of different chemicals. Studies have recently shown that the consumption of these artificial flavors can cause behavioral changes.

1-Methylcyclopropene: Ethylene is a natural hormone that ripens fruit at the rate it was meant to ripen in. 1-Methylcyclopropene is a gas that is pumped into containers of apples to stop them from producing this hormone. It’s also used on other fruits such as bananas. Grapes use a different chemical called Sulphur dioxide.

Aspartame: This is a sugar substitute that you can buy in stores, including brands like Equal and NutraSweet. You can also find this in almost any diet or low calorie/no sugar added drink. Unfortunately, certain babies are born without the ability to metabolize one of the two amino acids found in it, phenylalanine.

There are many others including astaxanthin, benzoic acid/sodium benzoate, BHA/BHT, canthaxanthin, emulsifiers, high fructose corn syrup, monosodium glutamate (msg), olestra, potassium bromate, etc.

Why You Should Always Tell The Truth

We live in a society where exaggeration and falsehood are slowly beginning to outweigh truth and honesty. We only see what people want us to see, when in reality, its how they are behind closed doors that truly describe their character. It’s so hard these days to weed out the genuine from the imitation, the honest from the dishonest and the real from the fake. Hearing lies has to be one of my biggest pet peeves, and the sad part is that I’m extremely good at spotting lies. Since I was younger, I have been lied to many times—mostly about silly things; and it can become quite saddening, especially when it’s from someone close to you.

The motive behind telling lies are probably many in number, but I believe the two biggest ones are either to be accepted, or to cover up something. But regardless of the reason for lying, it is never okay. If you don’t want someone to know something, it is better to not bring up that subject at all—that way the opportunity to lie won’t present itself. Let’s be completely honest though =-), we have all lied in our lives—especially to our parents when we were younger. But as we grow up, this habit should be taken seriously and stopped immediately. Here are a few reasons why:

The Power Of Words
Humans have incredible power latent within the words that they speak, but overtime this power becomes watered down by too much exaggeration and lies. If you study all the great men and women of history, you will notice that they seldom spoke. They only spoke what was necessary and what was true. When you train yourself this way, your words build up a great momentum of power, so the next time that you announce something filled with sincerity and conviction, the vibration of those words will shake the world to manifest their desire.

Practice truthfulness. Twelve years of absolute truthfulness in thought, word, and deed gives a man what he wills.”
~ Swami Vivekananda

And that is the truth—if you look at the lives of the yogis who hardly spoke, never mind lied, everything they will comes to light.

Lies Can Become True
If you continuously spit out whatever you feel like in order to get whatever you want, the universe will eventually have no choice but to put you in your place. Those who constantly lie will sometimes have to face their own lie one day just so that they can learn their lesson. This is not a confirmed phenomenon, but there’s no doubt that it has happened many times in the past.
If you constantly lie about someone’s death in order to create excuses for yourself, they may really die the next time that you do. If you lie and say you are sick all the time, you will really get sick the next time that you do and so on. It can even be found in the Bible:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
~ Proverbs 18:21

Every Lie Catches Up To You
This is a universal law. It may take years and years for it to catch up to you, but it eventually will; and when it does, you won’t be happy. Sometimes you will lie yourself into a huge mess to the point that you have no choice but to come clean in order to have things return to the way they were.

Here is an example that has recently happened to me. One day an employee wanted the weekend off and told me he was leaving town to celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday. No problem at all. I covered his shifts until everything was back to normal. Fast forward 6 months later and he requested another day off, telling me that it was his girlfriend’s birthday! Of course I immediately reminded him that birthday’s only come once per year if we are going by the generic American 12 month calendar. Needless to say he was quite embarrassed that I had caught him lying and had no choice but to admit that he lied to me.

There are so many ways that lies can come back around to bite you in the neck, it’s pointless to lie in the first place. You may look high and mighty now, but when you are found out, you will look low and crummy. Let’s make our world a better place by promoting truth and honesty.
